My girl crushes

11 02 2011

Girl Crush; noun;
feelings of admiration and adoration of the non-sexual variety which a girl has for another girl, usually the result of said girl possessing an incredibly sassy sense of style and, most importantly, major talent to boot. Or in short, said girl just freaking rocks.

Counting down my top ten girl crushes (I think I have the order right- actually, I’m not 100% sure. Positions 4-8 are completely interchangeable depending on my mood but it’s high time I hit “Publish” on this post >_>;;;)…

[10] Jang Geun Suk lol No seriously… >_>…
[10]Mizukawa Asami The Budding Leading Woman
Photobucket

Who is she?: A Japanese actress who is not quite a straight-up leading lady yet but excels in many of her supporting roles.

Have you ever seen her in?: Dark Water– apparently, she was in that! I watched it way back in 2002 but at the time my knowledge of  the J-industry was limited to horror flicks (and also a certain dude called Kimura Takuya, who I was kinda aware was a superstar but didn’t quite know what he looked like… ~_~) so I wasn’t paying full attention to her then. I do remember liking everything about the film big time though (despite being scared shiteless.) Alas, some years later, I saw the girl rocking the violin in Nodame Cantabile and was immediately intrigued (goshdarn all you violinists luring me!) but it was her role as the jetsetting Eri in Last Friends that made me fall for good. I’m not 100% sure if she is ready to take on leading lady roles yet but one thing is for certain- the girl can definitely act her butt off.

Photobucket
^^So I am happiest when I see her with this dude!: [insert random Arashi boy] lol j/ks ;))))))

[09] Gong Hyo JinThe Eccentrically Cool
Photobucket

Who is she?: A South Korean actress known mainly for her television work and also being the other half of actor Ryu Seung Bum.

Have you seen her in?: Ruler Of Your Own World, Sang Doo! Let’s Go To School and Thank You. – three of my favourite series of all-time. And she was perfect in all three. Like, “There is no one else who could’ve played your role” perfect.

The most recent series I’ve seen with her is Pasta, and although nothing in that series ever happened at all (and I mean EVER… hang on a second, something did get some people excited in episode 13 >O<; ) I never felt like I was wasting my time because she and Lee Sun Gyun were just so gooey sweet together! But somehow not sickening (*´ー`*) T’is a tough feat. Not to mention the girl was always trending it out to the max in the fashion stakes in this series as well- layers in my opinion have never looked so yummy.

Which brings me to this point- a huuuge reason why I love Gong Hyo Jin as much as I do is because in my eyes, she’s just such a freaking fashionista (!) It’s like she possesses this uncanny knack to make bizarre, eccentric, wholly whack clothes look like true fashion. If anyone else were to don some of the outfits she dons, they would look downright foolish. Honestly, I don’t know how she does it really but all I can say is she simply makes the super daggy look super, super cooooool :)

Photobucket
^^So I am happiest when I see her with this dude!: I should probably say Ryu Seung Bum but I’m not gunna. So whooisit then? Jang Hyuk! I think I just have that hair-washing scene from Thank You stuck in mah head xD

[08] Ha Ji Won The Courtesan
Photobucket

Who is she?: A South Korean actress, who is as successful in her drama series work as she is in her movies (let’s not mention her brief music recording career however, which needless to say, didn’t really sustain itself -_-;)

Have you seen her in?: Damo– as the super awesome Chae Ok. Hands down one of the best drama heroines ever. Then, as if she didn’t kick enough ass there, she went on to make What Happened In Bali and turned Lee Soo Jung, who was the world’s most painfully indecisive character (jicks, pulling her hair: “Guuurl, choose one of them already! Choose one so I can kidnap the other now!”), into someone you were actually barracking for.

AND THEN! As if that plus that wasn’t enough, the woman took on the lead role in Hwang Jin I with the utmost amount of grace and sheer strength and delicacy, firmly validating her absolute professionalism and total commitment to her art. In a nutshell, Ha Ji Won as Korea’s most famous gisaeng equals utter breathtaking perfection <3

And just in case anyone had any doubt, Song Hye Kyo came along a year later playing the same role in a movie version (albeit in a different mood and tone) and made Ha Ji Won look even better xDD (*hearts on SHK* Once upon a time Hye Kyo shi would have my top10 list. Now, I still like the gorgeous thing and all but for me she’s really stalled as an actress O_x Hopefully her upcoming big-time movie will boost her back up in the acting department again- working with Wong Kar Wai and Tony Leung can only be a good thing right? )

Photobucket
^^So I am happiest when I see her with this dude!: Jo In Sung. That’s right, all you Secret Garden shippers, I am laying it down straight! Although truth be told, I do think Ha Ji Won has chemistry with practically all her leading men. Must be a natural born talent because it appears that the woman is the ideal type for quite a handful of male celebs. Must be difficult being her (-_-;)

[07] Maggie Cheung The Movie Star
Photobucket

Who is she?: A Chinese actress from Hong Kong who started off as a Miss Hong Kong pageant first runner-up, dabbled in television acting afterwards and then one day fell into the hands of epic artsy director Wong Kar Wai and the rest, as they say, is H.I.S.T.O.R.Y.

Have you seen her in?: Well, everything. But if I had to select one film where I drooled the most, it would probably have to be In The Mood For Love. Maggie Cheung in a cheongsam brings a whole new definition to the term adkasjhdkasfjalsfjoawiufxDDDDDD;;;,,,

Her work speaks for herself. This woman was born to be A Movie Star ☆★☆ *glistening eyes*

Photobucket
^^So I am happiest when I see her with this dude!: Tony Leung of course.

[06] Son Ye Jin The Classic
Photobucket

Who is she?: A South Korean actress who has made a successful career in both television and cinema. This woman is one heckuva bankable leading lady and it doesn’t seem to matter too much what genre her work is either.

Have you seen her in?: Summer Scent– no? Well congratulations and pat yourself on the back, you have saved yourself 20hours of gruelling, hair-pulling pain (okay, maybe it’s more like 17.5hours. The first couple of eps were a’ight and I’m thinking there may have been a few small decent moments somewhere else along the line… but no more! No more!) I’m here to tell you, I loathed this series. Apart from the ridiculous heartbeat sound effect thing (which I wish wasn’t used at all much less having to put up with it being overused and abused >_>…), the two main characters did not win any of my empathy or sympathy. Not once, not a drop, not even for a split second. I seem to recall screeching lines such as “Just get over yourselves already!” “There are SO many more issues going on in this world!” and “If you want a problem, I’ll give you a problem..!” (><“) Nevertheless, I soldiered through all the mess- and it definitely wasn’t for Song Seung Hun‘s majorly lush eyebrows.

That’s right, it was for Son Ye Jin shi, who, to me, seems like the type that men would totally go for. I mean, if I were a guy, I’d probably be after her myself (Ah. Ahem.) While I think she’s rather brilliant already, somehow I feel that Ye Jin can and should still get better. For now, she is definitely taking strong strides, demonstrating and proving her versatility having already played characters across a broad range of different genres in her young career.

May I mention also- I love the way she cries <3

Photobucket
^^So I am happiest when I see her with this dude!: That carpenter-turned-architect guy xD

———

[05] Jeon Ji Hyun The Ultimate Sassy Girl
Photobucket

Who is she?: A South Korean model-turned-actress who is dubbed the nation’s CF Queen.

Have you ever seen her in?: ANY of her CFs- half the time I’m like, “Okay so I don’t really know what you are selling but yah, I’ll have 100 of them anyways thank you ^U^!” Usually the ones where there is alot of leg, midriff, S-line and/or hair-swaying action do the most damage^^;;;

Exhibit A: Giordano (this one is infamous!) ▎Exhibit B: Anycall (loving the blue)▎Exhibit C: Laneige (love the fresh-faceness) ▎Exhibit D: LaneigeExhibit E: 17Tea (possibly my fave!) ▎Exhibit F: 17Tea (er, pretty sure I drink 17Tea and I don’t look like  that in a jumpsuit…) ▎Exhibit G: Elastine (loving the black and white)

I hope you get my point. In all seriousness though, like most, it was her insanely charming and magnetic delivery of her role in the Korean movie My Sassy Girl– one of the best romantic comedies ever made- that captivated my heart and turned me onto her side for good and for life. And by that, I mean it don’t matter how poorly she or her films from thereon after performs or if she tries to pull a JinnyJinJin by venturing into America completely under-prepared (*coughs*Blood: The Last Vampire*coughs*)… I will still love her.

However, to this day I still can not bring myself to refer to her as Gianna. Just typing it out even makes me feel blah.

Photobucket
^^So I am happiest when I see her with this dude!: Jung Woo Sung baby! See any of their Giordano CFs for supporting evidence. Or, and I have some reservations in recommending this, the film Daisy. I guess if you can turn a blind eye to the rocky writing and Woo Sung‘s wobbly (at times overcooked) acting, the film wasn’t completely horrid. Just go into it not expecting too much and you will come out fine. Think; Jeon Ji Hyun being all artsy in Amsterdam and aah, Woo Sung in military cargoes and form-fitting tanks- at the very, very least, it is a very, very visually pretty watch for all ^_^,

———

[04] Kim Hyun Joo The Pretty
Photobucket

Who is she?: A South Korean actress, known mainly in the drama world.

Have you seen her in?: In Soon Is Pretty– I found it flat-out hilarious how in the story they kept making a point of her character not being pretty but I’m sitting there looking at Kim Hyun Joo shi on my screen thinking, “Come on peeps, no matter what way you look at her, frozen or in motion or even with your eyes shut, it’s still kinda obvious- you can sever her hair and chuck her in frumpy clothes but she’s still freaking glowing at ya -_-.”

So yeah, we know that she is pretty but I’m also thinking she’s graceful, she’s professional, she can act, she can kick Goo Joo Pyo‘s ass (*flying high tens*!!!!!!!!!!) yadiyayaya… but heya! She’s released her own craft book (booyah! for being so creative :D) and even more importantly, she’s a total humanitarian as well, having done volunteer work in Bangladesh and also lending her face (and body!) for a local campaign to raise awareness for breast cancer. Good looks, acting chops and a kind heart- how can a girl not love her? :)

Photobucket
^^So I am happiest when I see her with this dude!: I’m gonna suppress my My Girl love and cough up the name… Lee Dong Wook (~~!!!) Seriously, if you’ve not seen them in Partner already, investigate it now, please!! The series isn’t pick-ya-jaw-up-off-the-ground fantastic per se but it’s most definitely an enjoyable watch. Even if the cases aren’t your cuppa tea, the chemistry between Hyun Joo shi and Wookie is more than enough alone. These two will totally warm your heart like the feeling you get when you take the first sip of a super creamy hot chocolate (one where the marshmellow has half-melted) on a chilly Winter’s day (*´ー`*) (Oh, apologies to my man So Ji Sub, too. I know you and Hyun Joo shi were close-to-a-match-made-in-heaven in Glass Shoes but argh… if you watch Partner you will understand, too xox)

[03] Lee Na YoungThe Quirky Beautiful
Photobucket

Who is she?: A South Korean actress who made a name for herself early on in television before jumping out big into the movie world.

Have you seen her in?: Dream Of A Warriorbwahahahahaha :OOOOOO

I’m sure everyone involved in this film wishes it was just a dream. Seriously, do not touch this movie, not even with a 50ft pole. When Leon Lai‘s acting is the best thing about a project than you know something is hideously wrong (but er, don’t misconstrue me or anything, I do like Leon. Alot. He’s such a charitable man. And his acting is pretty good nowadays, it’s just that he’s not often known to carry a movie with his acting, that’s all O_o…)…

Alright, so a genuine recommendation? I would say… go watch her in Someone Special. It’s not your top-notch rom-com by any means but Na Young is perfectoPLUS in this. Why she liked Jung Jae Young‘s character so much in the film I will never fully understand because based on her face alone, I’m pretty sure she could go out and get any other guy who is (A) richer, (B) (classically) better looking, (C) has a more rippling body, (D) has more personality, (E) has a brighter future, or, (F) all of the above lol. But the movie totally epitomises everything I love about Lee Na Young– the wittiness, the “plaining down my beauty so much I end up looking even more beautiful,” and… the weirdoness (^_^)V (!!!)

P.S. She was also pretty much amazing as Jun Kyung in the series Ruler Of Your Own World– definitely an underrated series in my opinion.

Photobucket
^^So I am happiest when I see her with this dude!: Kang Dong Won. I decided this immediately after watching Maundy Thursday (which Lee Na Young was- yet again– the bomb in; as for Dong Won, mmm, good for the most part, maybe one or two questionable crying scenes for me (・_・;) ) but I don’t even necessarily want them to get together (I guess I want him for myself xDD,) my eyes just respond jubilantly to seeing them together. I’m thinking it’s something to due with their statuesque, manga-like proportions (pin head+long neck+super long limbs=ichiban! ;) )

[02] Ueno JuriThe Kooky Girl-Next-Door
Photobucket

Who is she?: A Japanese actress who, in my opinion, only has the sky as her limit.

Have you seen her in?: Nodame Cantabile. And Last Friends. You know what, watch them back to back and then take a moment to think about Juri-chan’s ability as an actress. And may I dare say, I don’t even think she has reached her prime.

While I heart the wonderfully weird wackiness of the piano genius that is Nodame, Juri‘s role as Ruka in Last Friends was what sucked me right in. Hardcore. Ruka was the one who ignited my inner girl crush crusher. Something about the being tomboyish but not being butch, something about the fragility, something about the complex spectacle of emotions. Ruka is so my homegirl! I even forked out something like $39 for her mug. I know, I hear you say, 39 big ones?? For a mug??? (´・_・`) Yep. I couldn’t help it. But I feel like it’s worth my every dime.

Might I add how bemused I was that Juri-chan was winning awards as the Best Supporting Actress because, well, come on, who seriously was watching Last Friends for Nagasawa Masami..?

Photobucket
^^So I am happiest when I see her with this dude!: If you’ve been putting up with my fangirltastic-gag-a-liciousness, this will be a no-brainer: Eita (duh.)

[01] Mika Nakashima The Voice
Photobucket

Who is she?: A Japanese singer with vocals as silky and as sweet as… the silk and candy store (???)

Have you seen her in?: The manga turned live-action movie Nana– get on it xDD If you can get around how thin the girl is in this film that is. Seriously, looking at Mika wearing those super body-hugging singlets, you get to see just how tiny her frame is… and then you wonder just how the girl manages to belt out all those amazing notes. And it all makes me want to sing louder into my hairbrush!

And while every part of my soul believes Mika was born to play Nana, and every piece of my senses loved rocking along to Glamorous Sky and all the other Black Stones beats, I don’t think I would be alone in saying this: Mika is best when her voice is the main instrument i.e. give the woman a good ballad and let her do the rest.

Btw, if you haven’t noticed, for some reason, I don’t address Mika in the traditional Japanese form (as in surname before given name) because for some reason, it just doesn’t feel right. It’s like, if someone tried to get Mika to sing live not barefoot xDD

^^So I am happiest when I see her with this dude!: Mmm… well, honestly… I am happiest seeing her with a microphone (I know, how freaking sappy of me right? (_ _) .)  So you can imagine my reaction when I came across the latest piece of news that Mika is making her official comeback after taking an extended hiatus to treat an aural condition… I really think I may have slightly peed in my pants xDDDDDD

April 27th, new single Dear– Can.Not.Wait.(!!!!!!)

In the meantime, here is one of my favourite lives ever from the woman:

I like this idea of choosing female actresses instead of male. Quite unusual. I have very few females that impress me. I don’t agree entirely with all your Koreans. A few are like cold fat on a marble slab for me. Others I admire to the extreme. I have to take time and take another look at this and maybe I will be able to give you ten of my own. Maybe five…
I think top two would be Ha Ji Won and Ueno Juri for certain. They have the extra something that defies perfection description. You just know they are real actresses.
I am watching Juri playing Princess Gou as a nineyear old girl at the moment.
She is utterly convincing.

A few are like cold fat on a marble slab for me
haha I’d love for you to tell me who they are, Peggy! You know I am all open for a hearty discussion ;)

I would definitely put my money on… Jeon Ji Hyun? While I don’t think she’s as bad as many people say she is, I can understand where people are coming from when they talk about her acting ability. It’s true that she hasn’t really blown anyone away since her My Sassy Girl and Il Mare days, but I did like Windstruck and also A Man Once A Superman- for me she has this onscreen charm and presence that is special. Blood did suck though, but I like to think Koyuki had something to do with it as well ;O … Kinda sounds like I am defending the girl, hmmmmm… well, in the end, I guess JJH is probably my semi blind spot^^;

I’m so eager to see Juri-chan as Princess Gou!! I’ve seen the costume fitting and she looks amazing already. Glad to hear you rate her, too. And Ji Won. Definitely agree with your description of them being real actresses :)

So, we have Juri, HJW and Maggie Cheung (who was indeed ravishing beyond words in her cheongsam in In The Mood For Love… I also need to point out the eyeliner. The way she wore it here, and also in Hero for that matter… Chae Rim may need to take some notes ;P)… who else rounds out your top 5 (or 10 if you’re game Peggy! I’m keen to know ^_^)?

That was then…this is now 2013. GOU is over at last and I have to change my total opinion of Ueno Juri. Her total ineptitude throughout this drama was really so obvjous. I realise she had to grow in age but she forgot to do that. Her scenes as a nine year old girl with her uncle Oda Nobunaga never happened in real life and it did not work in any way in the drama. Oda was grand and his sweet lover , general, battle tactitian was rendering me into jelly. He was so beautiful..Seto Koji. Be still my heart.
If they don’t make a taiga with Takuya Kimura as the older Oda and then give him Koji as Mori I shall be bitter forever.
Anyway I take back my admiration of Juri as an actor. she didn’t do the job this time.

Hiya! I’m back again… actually I’ve been pretty much stalking your page for updates*smiles sheepishly*

But yeah, hooray for girl crushes!! I’ve got a thing for a few special girls myself. Ueno Juri is definitely an actress I adore. I’ve only seen her in Swing Girls and Nodame Cantabile, and I loved her in both, especially as Nodame (who didn’t?).

Double hooray for Maggie Cheung mention (plus bonus points for Tony Leung mention)! She’s a goddess. I don’t girl crush her per se, more like adamant admiration with a bit of cult worshipping.

For me though, my #1 girl is Yu Aoi. She was superb in Hana and Alice, as well as in Hula Girls. At the same time, she gives off this aura of feminine and mature and yet so cute but not in that gushy cute way that’s overdone in the idol entertainment world. I don’t follow her news, but I definitely take note to at least watch her movies when/if I get the time.

Honorable mention also goes out to Park Jin Hee, whom I’ve only watched in The Woman Who Still Wants To Marry, but she also seems like an awesome, genuine person in real life. There’s an interview that she did that was posted on dramabeans some time ago that made me think “wow, now that’s a real celebrity who would be fun to hang out with in real life.” I think you’ll like TWWSWTM, it’s got a strong female lead, but it’s the sisterly friendship that really makes it work. So check it out if you have the time.

Ditto for Kim Sun Ah. I didn’t like My Name is Kim Sam Soon…I really tried to but just couldn’t understand the hype. But the lady stole my heart in S Diary. It might be that I was watching the movie at the right time in my life (this tends to happen a lot for me) but I just connected with her then.

Hey mud! Welcome again!

I love reading your comments so please keep them coming! :)

Oh I love the fact that you are a Maggie and Tony fan, we can definitely be friends then lol And spot on with the Goddess and cult worshipping terminology- I definitely consider myself to be cast under that woman’s spell (and it feels so good too lol) ;) Any favourite works of Maggie’s or Maggie+Tony’s?

I actually do like Aoi Yu, too! My impression of her is exactly the way you described her- to me, she feels kinda girl-next-doory too (albeit a unfairly super pretty one.) But I’ve only ever seen her in one movie (All About Lily Chou-Chou) so I can’t really judge so much. I think if I were to catch more of her work I would definitely grow to like her more (but I promise I won’t take her away from you ahaha.) Will check out the stuff you recommended ^_^

You’re surely not the first person to give The Woman Who Still Wants To Marry a big thumbs up, doozy has been talking great things about it too. I think I may need to make some time for that series… argh, too may dramas not enough time (if only work would understand… xPP)

Kim Sun Ah is fricking fantastic, too! While I didn’t love MNIKSS as much as many others did (I blame Hyun Bin lol) I definitely think Kim Sun Ah was awesome in it. Haven’t seen any of her movies but will look out for S-Dairy next time I’m at my local DVD store. I did catch bits of City Hall a while back and she seemed pretty good in that, too. Have you been able to watch it?

13 02 2011
mud

Ahh….I don’t think I’m qualified to choose a favourite Maggie work yet because there’s still so many that I haven’t watched. But for Tony, Chungking Express all the waaaaaay! Though it’s a pretty close call with his Infernal Affairs’ tortured soul character, who crawled and made a home for himself under my skin.

My apologies for not getting the Japanese naming down. The last and first name are sometimes really hard for me to tell apart… Anyway, I’ve been meaning to watch All About Lily Chou-Chou. It’s Shunji Iwai (Iwai Shunji?) AND Aoi Yu. How can I resist? I absolutely love love luuuuurve Love Letter. It’s up there as one of my favourite movies of all time.

And I hear you about not having time. I actually make it a personal rule to not touch dramas with a ten feet pole when I have school, though the occasional movie is ok. But this is why my list of movies and dramas to be watched is endless. While dramas keep coming out, I’m still stuck watching dramas from a few years ago. I feel like a prisoner chained to rock quarry and I’m ever so slowly chipping away at the list, but I know I’m in there for good. For life.

Yeah! Definitely check out TWWSWTM and S-Dairy!!

I did watch City Hall. It was alright storywise….but Cha Seung Won and Kim Sun Ah have got to be THE OTP to end all OTP (aside from maybe Tony and Maggie…) but ZOMG, the burning fiyah in their yearning eyes almost melted my computer screen. It was so intense. This was a couple I wanted to happen in real life like no other…. maybe even a love affair? Haha, yeah, I’m such a fangirl with wishful thinking when it comes to this pair.

Oh the day I run into a Cop 633 is the day I, er, eat 5000 cans of pineapples lol And ditto with Infernal Affairs. I don’t know if you’ve seen The Departed but as much as I love Leonardo DiCaprio, he absolutely had nothing on Mr Tony Leung IMO.

Have you seen the Red Cliff movies, btw? What did you think of them?

I’ve probably seen around 15 of Maggie’s movies but I still have a miles to go… but I am never shy in sharing my thoughts lol I think after In The Mood For Love, my next favourite of hers would be Comrades: Almost A Love Story. She was pretty close to perfect in that too :)

My apologies for not getting the Japanese naming down.
^^haha Never mind! I am notorious for making mistakes with names, and just general typos for that matter so it’s all good baby ;) I had to google it (!!) but it is Iwai Shunji :) Which you have reminded me… I need to check out his latest directed movie, Bandage (okay okay OKAY, so he may not be THE MAIN reason that I’m picking the movie up but *coughs*Akanishi WHO??*coughs* …meh ><;)

P.S. This may or may not be good advice but somethings a bit of drama therapy is a good thing for some people to help relieve the stress of studying (that is, if you can avoid yourself giving up valuable sleep to marathon certain series and then going into school the next day all sleepy and thinking about what happened in the last episode tehehe)

Yes, I have watched the Red Cliff movies. I prefer the 1st one to the 2nd. I know it’s supposed to be a war movie, which btw is sooo not my genre, but I liked the non-epic fighting parts more. The show of bromance in the first part was definitely more my cup of tea. Plus, how can I miss a movie (excpet Confessions of Pain because I heard that was painful to watch) with 2 of my favs: Tony and Takeshi?

Oh, how I wish I could watch dramas, but I seriously do no work whenever I’m watching… it’s not even consider procrastination because nothing gets done instead of being delayed. I de-stress by reading drama blogs, haha, and the occasional movie. I watched Crying Out Love In the Centre of the World this weekend.

I don’t think I could ever pick just ten dramas or movies. There are too many to think about and there is always a good scene or two in even a mediocre film or drama. Have to admit the cast draws me in first and then the story.
There is one Chinese film that I absolutely am crazy about. I have managed to see parts of it by just ‘happening’ on it when surfing the channels on TV. For a long time I could not find out what it was called. I had to guess and I was finally right,( which pleased me no end.) Can’t understand Mandarin at all. The film is a comedy called ‘Hands Up’. It has a cast of brilliant Chinese theatre and film comedians. They are the best. The story is simple really The few people in a village are trying to hide and save the large head of the Buddha from the oncoming Japanese army…. they are played by comedians also. It is the funniest film and it reminded me of the best of Laurel and Hardy in a way. I would watch it any time I came across it and would love to see it again and again.
Do you know this film? Have you seen it? Please try and find it because it will make you laugh out loud and make you feel happy. Imagine a donkey pulling a cart over a bridge which has been set with bombs. All waiting in hiding for the detonator to fire but the donkey stops and takes his time to answer the call of nature. Ensuing downpour puts out the fuse. And that’s just one funny scene.
I loved it.

*nods head* Yepyep, I preferred the first Red Cliff to the second, too, exactly for the reasons you mentioned. Tony & Takeshi, woot! Woot! Even if with that lovely little fluffy patch on Takeshi’s chin!

Re: Confessions Of Pain; I dunno if you’ve been told it was good painful of bad painful but… I would say give it a go definitely, if only for Tony and Takeshi. The story was quite frankly a (BIG) letdown, but the leading performances absolutely rocked (Tony turning an unlikeable character on paper into someone you wanted to know more about…) and cinematography-wise, it was a total feast for the eyes.

Oh did you like Crying Out Love In The Center Of The World? T’was one of my first (non-horror!) J-movies, the story didn’t even try but it just touched you. I also believe it’s one of Nagasawa Masami’s best performances to date.

Btw, mud, have you seen the J-dorama version as well?

26 02 2011
mud

Sorry for the late reply…. I guess I should use the email notification button, haha. But um, I thought Crying Out was an ok movie. The fiancee turning out to be the little girl was a little bit too much, imo. Also, the end bit with the English dialogue was also a bit weird. But otherwise it was alright. I was expecting a tearjerker and had readied tissues to use, but I wasn’t particularly moved to tears. And I’ve only finished 2 Jdorama as of yet and they’re GTO and Nodame. HYD & 1L are going to be watched someday…just not now. I didn’t know Crying Out had a drama version as well.

Oooooooh, I loved GTO! Onizuka sensei > Yankumi ANY day. Whaduya think? xP

By 1L I presume you mean One Litre Of Tears? Well, that was my first dorama & it definitely lives up to its title IMHO :`( *sobs* (I should probably stop telling you how sad things are before you start to think I am a giant wussball ><" Believe me, I ain't! *fist pump to chest* xDD)

And HanaDan, OH MY! HanaDan! I have a strong feeling you are gonna like it alot *squeaks bow on violin strings* Do let me know what you thought of it when you are done!!!

Gong Li…Remember her in ‘Red Sorghum’ Saw her the other day in interview. she is so elegant and still looks ageless.
Go Du Shim..? think that is her name. She is older but truly a beautiful woman and the most entrancing actress. Still remember ‘More Beautiful than a Flower’.
Lee Mi Sook. Lovely actress. Watch her with Lee Jung Jae in the film ‘An Affair’
Well…that is if you can take your eyes off Jung Jae…be still my heart….

Nice list Peggy! But only five? xP j/ks

I not too familiar with Go Du Shim except I think she played someone’s mother in Miss Mermaid, and also Hyun Bin’s mother in Snow Queen. Definitely very classy and very elegant. I’m not all clued in with any of Lee Mi Sook’s works but I looked her up and she is really beautiful! Kinda something a lil vixen-esque about her (in a very classy way.) Will look out for An Affair though (sounds like there may be a few secret rendezvouses btwn the woman and a spring chicken Lee Jung Jae hey? xP)

As for Gong Li, I think she is certainly getting more beautiful with age. I’ve not seen Red Sorghum but I do remember her rocking it in Raise The Red Lantern and also Farewell My Concubine. Didn’t think much of Curse Of The Golden Flower though (although I think it may have been the entire film in general^^;)

While we’re on a role, I’d love to hear your list of favourite guys too ;)

My favorite Maggie Cheung movie is Irma Vep, a French film where she plays a Hong Kong action star brought in to do a remake of a silent French vampire film. It is beyond funny as she has to cope with the language difficulties, the director having a breakdown, being interviewed by the film critic who hates French cinema, the lesbian interest of a crew member, the time constraints before she needs to leave for the next project. Makes me happy to re-watch it every time.

14 02 2011
jicks

That’s the film where Maggie rocks a cat-suit, yeah? I’ve heard of it but I’ve never gotten around to watching it! Boo on me ><; Thank you for taking the time to recommend it and comment on it- you've sparked my interest in it big-time. I am surely on a mission now ;)

Btw, is the original movie audio in English? Or French?

16 02 2011
isabelh

Well, it is nominally French, but since all the interaction with Maggie Cheung are in English, it is mostly English. The US version has English subtitles for the few French parts.

Cool, then I won’t have to worry too much about landing a badly subbed copy then ;)

Will get onto it ASAP (my “TO WATCH” list is beyond outta control, lol)

Amy

Ha, good one. Asami Mizukawa + Maggie Cheung + Juri Ueno x)

Btw, I think Mizukawa’s character in Last Friend was Eri… not Miki.

And I’m jealous you bought Ruka’s mug. My dad and I wanted to buy that one but were too cheap to get them shipped. xD

*smacks head* *edits post* Oopsies, I was thinking of Asami’s character in Nodame ;)

Glad to know we like the same girlies! If only we could get them all in the same movie together… (super wishing thinking but, hey^^)

I don’t know if this helps but rakuten feature the okaeri mugs. i think they’re kinda like a shopping agent service but do check it out anyways even if it’s just to ogle at them ;)

Male favourites…??? very difficult to list I think. Obviously for me the only ichiban will always be Takuya Kimura over and above all others. He has melted my bones for over fifteen years, so I set him apart and then try to look at others.

It all depends if you are talking people who can act versus people who are hunks. I am still in recovery from Sungkyunkwan School so those three charmers are still foremost. Not just hunks but they showed some pretty good acting skills. Ah In is an experienced actor and the others are still just ankle deep. They are adorable all of them.
Kim Nam Gil..really good actor and very interesting man.
So Ji Sub. Good actor but has to lighten up when he chooses his roles. He is brilliant with tragedy but I want to see how he delivers something more in comedy/romantic. He certainly does the perfect love scene but he always dies at the end it seems. Did not watch his last drama. Too heavy. War is not for me. Been there and done that for real so films like that are out.
Kim Rae Won is a lovely actor and very sexy in a very wholesome way. Whoever he marries will have a great husband/lover/protector for the rest of her life.
Lee Jung Jae superb actor and charming. Like him a lot.

Well that’s eight and now I have to go and start y taxes. I will add more to the list later.
Oh must add Kim Seung Soo. He is older but was a rocker. Sang and played instruments. Is artist and sculptor. Married and family but boy does he still have it. First saw him in drama “Man In Crisis’. He was younger and very good in his role. Also wonderful OST…. songs particularly, sung by Lee Dong Uk (J.J) Amazing voice and does ballads and jazz and made a good name for himself when he left Canada and went back to Korea. You can do a search and find him and listen online. I have his albums. Love his voice.
Must go…:-)

It all depends if you are talking people who can act versus people who are hunks.
^^haha I know EXACTLY what you mean by that. But unfortunately, a sad but oh-so-true (& admittedly a lil bit fun^^;) fact of my life, despite certain boys not being able to act as well as others, as long as they star in a series or a movie, I am 100million times more likely to watch it *coughs*[insert random Fahrenheit boy]*coughs

Agreed whole-heartedly with Kimura Takuya. I know myself and E.G. poke alot of fun at the man but just as you say Peggy, I think he’s so much in his own realm that I don’t even go to rank him with the others ;)) Him and Tony Leung for me, & also, I’m not if you are familiar with him, the late Hong Kong actor/singer Leslie Cheung.

Re So Ji Sub, if you want him to lighten up I think you may have just been granted your wish- have you heard the news of him whipping himself into a hip hop artist?
http://www.allkpop.com/2011/02/so-ji-sub-releases-second-teaser-for-pick-up-line#disqus_thread
^^I think I cried because I didn’t want to believe what I was seeing is true :( While I think I said a while ago that I would like him to lighten up, I didn’t mean turn YO!YO!-P.I.M.P.A.L.I.C.O.I.U.S. (what is with the perm??) I would much prefer him maintaining the lonely, mysterious, wholesomely good human being image that so many of his fans love him for. As one of the comments by blank read, “I love you Ji Sub, but why?”

Re Road No.1, I caught a few episodes of it but gave up because like you, I found it too heavy. At the same time, I wasn’t too sold on it being a genuine war story or genuine love story… it’s like it was trying to be too epic ><" I think Ji Sub just needs help choosing the right path of work (he should allow his fans to submit a consensus vote^^)

Completely had no idea who Kim Seung Soo was until you just mentioned him but now I will definitely keep any eye out! if he gets the Peggy Seal Of Approval, then I'm thinking I better pay attention ;) After all, we share the same liking for Kim Nam Gil, and while I'm not a Kim Rae Won fan, I did definitely see his appeal in Which Star Are You From? ^_^

Btw Peggy, if you’re gonna take Lee Jung Jae, then I’ll be taking his best buddy Jung Woo Sung xDD

Can’t wait to hear the rest of your list… it sounds like you like very manly men tehehe ;)

18 02 2011
Peggy

You know So Ji Sub was always a hip hop fan. It was said somewhere that he would join his pals at a club and have drinks and then he would just start to dance by himself and do the hip hop thing and finally finish drinking and without another word he would go home. Very quiet and not anti-social, but he could enjoy himself without being noisy and that was his evening…. Full of surprises that man.

Peggy

Apologies..mea culpa…re Kim Seung Soo. Yes! he is all you can wish for in a male but the description I gave should be for SIN SEONG WOO who was the rocker etc.
He is now playing in HOME SWEET HOME He is older but just like fine wine… Kim Seung Soo is also the sexiest guy and a good actor. He did a death scene in ‘Lawyers’; that is the best I have seen. Of course it may be because I didn’t want him to die but it was close to the end of the drama anyway. He plays baseball every week with a group of actors and comedians. Tall dark and handsome.
Sin Seong Woo also Tall dark and handsome. Hope I have not misled you too far. After all they are both worth being on any list…..

15 02 2011

Kim Seung Soo just did a role in the weekly drama ‘Home Sweet Home’ It was medium-good but he played his character just right and it was not one that was admirable all the time. Interesting drama.

*googles Sin Seong Woo* Oooooooo definitely an interesting rugged vibe going on there- I like ;))))))) Thankyou for introducing me to real men haha

Re Chinese movie ‘Hands Up,’ I tried searching for it but to no avail! :( Will pick the brains of my local DVD store people next time I drop in. The donkey scenes sounds flat-out hilarious. Sounds like you watched it without subs Peggy? How did you manage to understand it? (you must have pure skills ;) )

Re selecting series to watch, I’m almost always also taken in by the cast before anything else. I’m sure we all have actors and actresses we strive to be ‘completists’ for- unfortunately, my list is getting outta control X_o

First off, I love your definition of “girl crush” and this meaty post! And your choices of photos and apt adjectives for each actress.

And ROFL at the Jang Guen Suk jab! Too funny, mostly because it’s true… ahahahhahhahah

If I may, I’d like to comment on the actresses with whom I’m familiar. (Long comment ahead…)

Gong Hyo Jin
Totally agree that her natural chemistry with Lee Sun Gyun was the main thing that kept me on that Pasta gondola till the end. And YES! on her being a fashionista. I think her long and slender figure helps but it’s her confidence and I-don’t-give-a-fig-what-other-people-think-I’m-gonna-wear-what-I-want attitude that make her so charismatic. SHE wears the clothes, not the other way around. Sometimes, I wish I could be like that instead of being a conformist. le sigh.

Ha Ji Won
That pic is like woah! She looks really different. Was this taken in the early days of her career or recently?

I only saw bits and pieces of What Happened in Bali and the snippets that I did catch of her character frustrated me, so I didn’t care too much for her then. However, when I watched Hwang Jini, her performance blew me away. Like you said, Ha Ji Won was perfecto in that role.

Son Ye Jin
My no.1 girl crush! I saw a little bit of her in Summer Scent and thought, “Dang, who is this actress? She is so ethereal and gorgeous!” And then Alone in Love came along and her excellent performance made me a fan and bumped her way up to the top of my list of fave actresses.

Ditto on SYJ’s crying skills! Whenever she cries, it breaks my heart because her tears come across to me as being so real and sincere.

Kim Hyun Joo
if you watch Partner you will understand
I understand, girl. I totally understand! As much as I love My Girl and the Yoo Rin/Gong Chan coupling, I would probably say the same thing as you. Even if their romantic relationship wasn’t the primary focus of Partner and was only hinted at most of the time, when I saw these two together onscreen, it always brought a smile to mah face. The chemistry between Kim Hyun Joo and Lee Dong Wook in Partner… it is something special.

My favorite OTP scene of the show is when Tae Jo was driving Eun Ho back after he got her a new cellphone coz he threw her old phone out. On the way, he had to slam on the brakes at one point while she was sleeping and when she tipped forward, he reflexively put his arm out to block her fall. She remained sleeping of course and ever so gently, he turned the back of his hand around so that he could hold her hand in his. Okay, I can’t exactly pinpoint what it is that made this scene work for me, perhaps it’s the simplicity of the moment, his quiet longing, her obliviousness… I dunno, but when I saw that, OMG, I SQUEEEEE ALOUD! Do you remember this scene?

Ueno Juri
In my opinion, the character of Nodame was walking that tightrope of annoying/cute, and in the hands of a lesser actress, would have been a caricature. But Juri’s portrayal was so endearing and likeable. Instead of rolling my eyes at her 2907987 quirks, I was grinning and was rooting all the way for her to get with Chiaki senpaiiiiiiii.

BUT even Chiaki senpai is no match for Eita because yeah, what you said.

Surprises on the list, for me, include:
-Jeon Ji Hyun, didn’t know that she’s your “blind spot”
-Also, how high-ranked Lee Na Young is in jicks’ eyes

Which brings me to another thing I like about this post, learning about what my fellow drama watching buddy likes/dislikes.

eh… I forgot to close the bold tag so now the last part of the comment is bolded. Oops. Can you fix it, jicks? Thanks and sowie.

I love long and meaty comments! :)

Re Gong Hyo Jin, SHE wears the clothes, not the other way around. <<<SO TRUE^_^! And you're right, her long and lean limbs definitely make things easier. I always love checking her fashion editorials out, she makes awkward poses look cool ;) She did a shoot for High Cut magazine earlier this year which I absolutely love, not sure if you've seen it yet but here it is:
http://soheelover.wordpress.com/2011/02/05/magazine-gong-hyo-jin-high-cut-magazine/

Re Son Ye Jin, agreed with the word ethereal! For all that the story of Summer Scent pained me, a fresh-faced SYJ + lush green scenery was a true ravishing feast for the eyes. But yah, Alone In Love was like, YEP this girl ain't just a pretty girl, she can also definitely act :)

Re Ha Ji Won, I've had that pic of her for aaages, not quite sure but it's at least 2 couple of years old. I think she's a bit of a chameleon really.

Re Kim Hyun Joo, OMG that scene in Partner!!!!!! Of course I remember it!!!! xDDDDDD the simplicity of the moment, his quiet longing, her obliviousness <<< Yes, hells yes & YES! That was probably my favourite moment, too. Actually, there were numerous super sweet moments, from like how he would put a bandaid on her palm to how he would stretch get a folder from the top shelf for her when he saw her overstretching (´ー`) Oh! I also loved this scene towards the end, I can't quite remember exactly what happened but I think they were visiting someone in the lockup and Kim Hyun Joo heard some pretty soul-breaking news, she’s trying to stay strong fighting her tears, all of a sudden looks down at her hand and he is holding onto it! Major fangirl spazz right there lol

Re Juri, *nods head at everything you said* :))))))

Re Jeon Ji Hyun, *runs and hides from Academy* >_>;;; I rarely have them with female artists but yeppies, she’s one of my blind spots! I guess she is proof that sometimes all you need is one good piece of work to represent and you’re set for life (although I sincerely hope there is more good work to come from the woman -_-;)

Re Lee Na Young, maybe I need to talk about her more… but it’s difficult since the girl is so selective with her work she only ever churns out something once every 2 years (if you’re lucky…)

Which brings me to another thing I like about this post, learning about what my fellow drama watching buddy likes/dislikes.
^Hmm, never thought about a “Dislikes” list but… that would certainly be easy to type up LOLOL j/ks. Actually, it was reading your “My Loves” page over at your blog doozy that gave me a kick up the derriere to finally get this post rolling! I’ve tried conjuring a 10 Favourite Dramas list like you did but no matter what I kept feeling like I was leaving certain series out… I know this may be cheating but I may very well just need to break them down into different countries~~…

P.S. No worries on the bold tags ;) Fixed, easy as pie!

Another thing to add about Son Ye Jin:
When she sings in her films and dramas, something about her unpolished singing voice and the way she puts her sincerity into the songs that hit all my emotional spot just right.

she’s trying to stay strong fighting her tears, all of a sudden looks down at her hand and he is holding onto it
Yes, that scene was awesome! I can’t believe it slipped my mind. Thanks for the reminder.
Yes, I remember now. I think one of their female clients lost her husband tragically and was weeping. And Tae Jo, knowing how the situation really hit close to home for Eun Ho, totally assured her with a simple but powerful gesture that he is there for her. What a man!

I’ve tried conjuring a 10 Favourite Dramas list like you did but no matter what I kept feeling like I was leaving certain series out
Dude, it was a challenge for me to narrow down my top 10 fav dramas too. I kept going back and forth between certain shows, and there were moments when I was over thinking this whole listing thing.
So yeah, break them down if that works for you. That’s not cheating, imo.

Ender's Girl

jiiiiicks!!!! This is a seriously awesome post!!! Love the clever epithets you gave each laydeh and how you encapsulated everything good and cool about them. I agree with most of the chicks on your list, esp. GHJ, SYJ, Gianna (rofl), HJW, Maggie (!) and Juri. (My list would prolly contain Shin Min-a, Kim Sun-a, Yamaguchi Tomoko for the sheer hotness, Natsukawa Yui — ‘coz she’s just so classy! — and Shinohara Ryoko.) And I LOVE how you end each entry with your fave OTP for that particular actress. Just goes to show that at the end of the day, we just want our girl-crushes to end up happily in the arms of The One. :-)

Re Jeon Ji-hyun – w000t @ at all those hotter-than-hot CFs!!! I do have quite a few of them, including the one she did for a Samsung printer and which first got her on the map. Also the CF with Woo-sung that was banned or something for being too racy (but I didn’t find it racy at all!). That Sassy Girl is one hot tamale, lol. And the Giordano ads with JWS and Jang Dong-gun were cute. Too much cuteness concentrated per unit area!!!

Re Gong Hyo-jin – I love her fashion sense too! Totally second doozy that she wears the clothes, not the other way around. Come to think of it, Ryu Seung-bum oughtta learn a few pointers from his GF, lol. I mean have you seen him on the red carpet? The Korean Oguri Shun or Johnny Depp in his bad moments, lol.

Re Maggie – ZOMG what year was that old Tony+Maggie pic taken???? When when when??? It’s such a perfectly lovely & sweet moment captured on film. Makes me wanna *sniffle* (What did Maggie see in that French dude anyway? lulz)

Re Na-young – I loved Someone Special too! She and JJY were a hoot, esp. the scene where she goes, “why do you pick your nose? stop picking your nose” or something like that, ROFLLLLL. Oh, and I also enjoyed Please Teach Me Engrish (Elviiiissss!!!! hahahaha). :-)

Btw I laughed the hardest reading your stabs at the effeminate little twerps we like to twit so much (lmfao @ pseudo-entry #10 and lmfao at Johnnies — just ‘coz they’re Johnnies lol) Also loved your definition of “girl crush” – straight from a v. reliable source, jicktionary or jicksipedia lol ^^;;

17 02 2011
Ender's Girl

Btw I forgot to say that every time I hear someone say “Someone Special” I automatically think of “Someday for Somebody” (Kame’s solo in the 2007 KT con) and “Special Happiness” (Kame and Junno’s duet). hihihihihihi 8P

20 02 2011
jicks

tehehe Haven’t heard of Kame+Junno’s Special Happiness (sounds like a place I’d much rather leave for those boys to enjoy, ah, experience themselves haha ^U^) but Somebody For Someday! I’ll admit to liking it- I mean, Kame put so much heart into belting out those notes! I can almost see Jin standing in front of him as Kame sings it… out to him gahaha ;)

I love your list of girls, too! Yamaguchi Tomoko is definitely one hot woman, and likewise Shinohara Ryoko- I mean, even in baggy cargoes and floppy flannies she still oozed a quiet sex appeal ;)

I love x100million all the Giordano commercials with the 3 Js (JDG, JWS & JJH ^_~) !!! …Even though I think JDG ended up getting the girl in most of them haha I recall the one where they’re in a bath tub (with their clothes one? What?) and also the one where they’re on a bus.

lol at Ryu Seung-bum being the Korean Oguri Shun and/or Johnny Depp (but hands down Johnny has more skills IMO ^_^)

Re that Tony and Maggie piccie, I know right? The spring chickenness is so loveable! It’s from all the way back in 1984 when they starred in a Hong Kong television series together called ‘Police Cadet” and it definitely makes me think “if only” everytime I look at it (´ー`)

lol I wasn’t a fan of Maggie and Olivier either (!) but I definitely don’t mind her with her latest (??? are they still together???) man Ole Scheeren. I guess I just like architects xDD

28 02 2011
Ender's Girl

Oh! I didn’t know Maggie and her French dude are no longer a couple. Tsk tsk. But thanks for the trivia bit re Police Cadet. 1984??? Seriously? That long ago? *whistles* Those two are soul mates! The Tom Hanks + Meg Ryan of Hong Kong!

Re the Giordano CFs — ahahaha I remember the one in the bathtub! And they were playing this Western song with a woman’s name as the title — Aubrey was it? lol can’t remember. The bathtub+clothes+threesome concept really threw me off. I liked the CFs that actually told a story.

HAHAHAHA @ everything you said about Special Happiness and Someday for Somebody!!! Jin standing in front of Kame = GOLD. Or he could be in one of those boxes (a la Hollywood Squares) which were otherwise occupied by Juniors when Kame performed the song at the 2007 con (loved the color-changing concept, btw).

Special Happiness is this nice little chillout-y song, lots of whistling involved (Kame) and minimal fanservice (thankfully). Sounds a lot like All Saints’ Never Ever, but in a good way. ;-)

1 03 2011
jicks

Thank you for posting the clip :) You’re right, the song is pretty cool! Likey, likey! :))) I hope Jin will be proud of me for learning about this song, lol.

Perhaps the contrast of Junno’s preppy geeky good boy vibe made me think this, but, while you did say minimal fanservice, it looked to me Kame was really, really trying to restrain himself from swerving his hips around too much haha (& btw, why was he sweating so much?? xPP)

Notes re things…

When I hear
Someone special..I immediately hear ‘Last Christmas’ playing incessantly in my head.
Also frustrated finding anything of ‘Hands Up’ but I still believe that is the title. I had no difficulty understanding the very sparse dialogue. It could almost rank as a silent film except for screams and howls and shots being fired etc.etc. I watched it so many times that I would be ashamed if I did not understand it all.
I love that movie. The cast all famous comedians but I don’t know names….
Saw a documentary about cheongsams. It seems it was fading away for general retail until ‘In the Mood for Love’ and Maggie looked so ravishing that it immediately became fashionable and desired once more. Special shop in Beijing still in business and all they make is the cheongsam for clothing. Also make silk quilts which look so wonderful. I sleep only with two quilts but those silk ones would be heaven. Filling also silk. Decadence for a princess.
suits me….

22 02 2011
jicks

Oh, Last Christmas, that’s definitely one of my favourite Christmas carols, along with Mariah’s All I Want For Christmas (okay, so I’ve just lost all credibility…) :D :D

I’m glad Maggie brought cheongsams back, they exude such a level of class and elegance. Sounds like we both need to make a visit to this shop in Beijing! :) Actually, I remember years ago in the American sitcom Friends, Jennifer Aniston’s character Rachel wore a cheongsam style outfit in one of the episodes (may have been the one with The One With The Stripper… for Phoebe’s bacholerette send-off) and I recall reading that demand for clothing in that cheongsam style really shot up. It’s amazing what star power can do.

Needless to say I agree ;))))

Watching those two series back to back would’ve been intense! (esp Last Friends, there was alot to take in xP)

Totally off topic..

Does Ha Ji Won have a brother who is the lead guitar and singer with CNBlue ??
I like that group they are ‘straight stand there’ musicians and don’t fool around with military style ‘dancing’…
Speaking of groups..I don’t like girl groups. they are like bits of hot bacon squirming around on a hot griddle. Most can’t sing at all.

23 02 2011
jicks

Ha Ji Won does have a younger brother in showbiz but he ain’t a CNBLUE boy (although he kinda does have the hair style to be one lol.) His name is Jun Tae Soo, an actor, who I believe was the villain in Sungkyunkwan Scandal. I also believe he was recently charged for assaulting a taxi driver and two policemen. He was drunk >_>;

Re CNBLUE, I love them! I love their indie rock flava, and yepyep, definitely a nice refreshing change to the permeation of synchronised dancing boybands (although, Confession #1: I do have a soft spot for a couple of said bands^^;) Like you, I am not really a girl group kinda gal either exactly for the reasons you’ve stated (although, Confession #2: I do bop along to a couple of Wondergirl and Girls Generation tracks here and there *face palm*) but have you noticed alot of them have been finding success in the Japanese market lately!! Synthesisers, autotune and super short shorts are such amazing tools :DD

24 02 2011
Peggy

Well I agree that way back….. a year ago.?… the girl groups were rather good and fresh but now they have become too overloaded with what their managers think is necessary to pull in the money. they are doing well in Japan because there are, or were, no groups like the Korean ones. In Japan they don’t have the concentrated daily practices and appearances all the time. Maybe that will change to catch up. Boy Bands were worked to death of course..a la SMAP etc.

I love CNBlue…and 2 AM and 7 PM… AND ShinEE!!! Minho is a darling.
Also love BOOLWHA and Tae and also Yun do Yeon. He is not often on TV over here any more. I like some of the older ballad singers and especially there is a Korean female singer who has been over in US several times. she has been invited two or three times to Carnegie Hall I think. Can’t remember her name at the moment. wonderful voice..not young. Must try and think…..

Did not know that was Ha Ji Won’s brother. Yes did know of his arrest. Too bad when he was working on another role. Hope he straightens it all out.Not quite as successful as the other leads from SKKS.

1 03 2011
jicks

Oh, 2AM, I heart them, too! 7PM… I’m unfamiliar with them. You know, now that I think about it, it wouldn’t entirely be a bad thing if the KPop industry slow down churning out their boybands & girlbands, I think I’m starting to get confused! ShinEE I like also. But if I had to choose my favourite Korean boyband, it’ll probably have to be DBSK- love their Japanese stuff, too <3

I would start on Japanese boybands but you may lose some respect for me, Peggy^^; *hides Arashi CD collection under SMAP poster & kicks it all under the bed ;)*

2 03 2011
Peggy

Why did I type 7PM???I think I meant 2PM It’s the group with the Thai boy. Nichkhun. He is darling and is also with Victoria in the show ‘Just Married’. He is such a kind person and very polite and attentive. You would really think he was in love with her. Then you see him with his group and he is totally different.Very strong dancer etc.
No need to hide anything under the ed. I just never did ick up on the younger Japanese groups. Spent too long with SMAP…….What will I do with all the pics and DVDs and concert stuff???

2 03 2011
Peggy

I think I have to get a new keyboard. I know I type the letters but they don’t alway connect. ‘under the BED’ and ‘never did PICK up’….
I think this one I am using is about twenty years old and I can’t count the upgrades on actual computers and monitors I have had. Just loved my old keyboard…..

5 03 2011
jicks

haha Never mind on the typing thing, I have a perfectly well-behaved keyboard yet I still often manage to make major typing errors.

Oh definitely 2PM! Wasn’t 100% converted thought until Heartbeat was released, as soon as I heard that track, I was right there with them! I think in the MV how they’re lying “lifeless” on the smithereened ground is kinda cheesy but they are one group that I enjoy watching dance. And yes, Nichkhun is definitely a cutiepie ;)

I’ve read some feedback on Nichkhun & Victoria being a lil fake on We Got Married but it’s reassuring to hear you say good things about them :) I’ve always wanted to watch the show in full but only ever managed to catch snippets of random clips. I remember seeing alot of Kim Hyun Joong & Hwang Bo a while back & loving them as a couple- I’m thinking it must’ve been the younger man / older woman thing that did it for me xD

Re all your SMAP goodies, keep them Peggy! Keep them!

5 03 2011
Peggy

re Just Married. this is really a fictional show of course. However I think Nichkhun is very sweet and so kind even if he is playing a role. they do seem to act well together and there does not seem to be any backing away so it turns out well.He could probably do as well with any other actress don’t you think??

a big YAAAY for Juri Ueno :D

and yeah, I’m rooting for Aoi Yuu to be on the list

and again, Bae Doo Na. She’s SUPERB. as you can see in movie like Linda Linda Linda, Air Doll, and Barking Dogs Never Bite.

Aoi Yu is definitely popular, & very understandably so :)

I’ve only seen Bae Doo Na is The Host, Mr Vengeance & also Barking Dogs & I do agree she is a top actress. Wanted to check Air Doll out actually because I like Odagiri Jo & heard Doo Na shi was brilliant in it but the feedback for the plot of the movie left me a little apprehensive. Will look into it, & Linda Linda Linda, thanks to your recommendation^^

And yep, Juri-chan! Glad to meet a fellow fan *high five*

Are you watching Ueno Juri in GOU? It is playing now on TV here in CA but it is also on D-addicts for download with soft subs and hard subs (Engl) I am watching it on TV without subs but I am d.l with Eng. and saving for a long watch later. It is good, but I am a rabid admirer of Taiga and also anything about Oda Nobunaga. He is only on the first five or six episodes in this drama but he has that beautiful Mori Ranmaru in most every scene with him even if he is only sitting behind him. Wonderful real story about them I think and I have always admired Nobunaga. The drama is based upon the princesses behind the scenes of the Sengoku warring period. Very much the writers’ story and imagination so the history is not accurate. The scenery is wonderful and the costumes and the OST. I think worth watching and especially if you also read up on that era.
I have fallen madly for Seto Koji who plays Mori. He is so beautiful and far more sensual in the most innocent way than any of the younger JE idols. I have to go into rehab to get over his affecting charms. !!!

Re Gou, not currently watching it but I have every intention to. I think in your last comment you said Juri was already doing a brilliant job… is she holding up her game? What about Mizukawa Asami?

As for the historical accuracy representation, I’m usually not too much of a critic in this regard so long as the production values are still high, the historical figures/characters still respectable/admirable & the general mood of the era is not misconstrued, because for me, after all, drama-watching is about being entertained & taken away more than anything else :))

Re Seto Koji, hey the’s the boy in Koizora yeah (the drama version of course.) I have to say I do think he has a very angelic face, sometimes I think he’s is prettier than many girls (thinking it may be those big dolly eyes ^^;) So thank you for the warning Peggy! When I get started on Gou I will be sure to extra careful so not to have to come join you at rehab, lol ;))

Btw, re Nichkhun: He could probably do as well with any other actress don’t you think??
^^Yupyup *nods head* Wouldn’t mind seeing him dabble in a bit of acting actually. I’m thinking nothing too dramatic just a light, airy rom-com kinda deal perhaps, tehe.

I am still d/l ‘GOU’ I am also watching with out subs on TV, Well, now and then they put subs. I am getting a little tired of Ueno now. She has not changed at all and acts the role in a set style which does not move me. It is difficult to accept her when she is in a scene with her uncle Nobunaga. I know it is a made up scene from the mind of the writer and could never have happened. I am seeing Nodame every episode. Not acceptable. I am hoping that once she gets old enough to be married off then we mights see a young woman and not a childish rendition. It is still an evenful taiga and the other actors are well cast I think. Still not happy with the way the director makes Hideyoshi overact as if he were a monkey, instead of a wily and intelligent and totally loyal general to Nobunaga. Just because he gave Hideyosh the nickname of Saru, it does not mean he acted like a monkey. He was small and sharp and not handsome but always the complete samurai. sigh. Well it is a fictional interpretation.

Oh no Peggy! *blocks ears* I am yet to watch Gou but.. I can’t… cannot imagine Juri… sucking? How many episodes along is Gou? Hopefully Juri can pick up her slack & amaze us all soon. I’m glad that she has finally landed such a great production & wish for her to make the most of it because in the past, I’ve often felt she was starring in series where the quality of the script wasn’t necessarily on the same level as her acting capabilities. That said, I can kinda imagine what you are saying about her Nodame traits seeping through, I do remember one or two instances in SunaNare feeling the same thing- the quirkiness is really just the way she is in person :)

Are Miyazawa Rie & Mizuakwa Asami scoring well with you so far?

Still not happy with the way the director makes Hideyoshi overact as if he were a monkey…
^^ahahhaah Sorry, this sounds too funny :D :D I guess though this is sometimes the problem with directors and their fictional interpretations, but I am much like you- fair enough you can create fictional scenes and events but I would always prefer a true depiction of the figures/characters.

Peggy

Jicks dear,
You absolutely must watch GOU from the very first episode. You can’t hop on to a later episode and get the whole story that this writer has prepared. I am prejudiced against the fictional way she has merged her ideas into what was a perfectly amazing historical time. I have d/l each episode of this drama with the subs with a view to doing a marathon watch later. I am only catching an episode on TV here and there, some with and some without subs. I am getting the picture and it is good but I am getting bored with GOU herself. She overrides so many scenes and you know she would never be in some places where they put her. It probably does not annoy most people but it bugs the stuffing out of me. I do hope she will change her rendition of this princess later as she gets older and gets married and starts having her nine or ten children. I wonder if that will be part of the drama…. The other actresses are really good and you can believe that Ichi was really a wonderful woman who managed her difficult life in a very elegant way until she finally came to her own crossroad. The costumes are magnificent, altho since Ueno was portaying a nine year old girl, her kimonos were short and not really attractive. The adult clothes of men and women were super. Battledress was pretty accurate for the time. I never could understand how they could wield those long spears, and use bows and arrows with any accuracy when they were wearing all that battle armour. Of course for me there was never enough Nobunaga.
On the whole I feel that Rie and Asami are putting themselves more deeply into their characters. They have such really beautiful faces and look the part of Japanese nobility.

Like your picks, but I would rate some different, and add a few others too. Of course as I’m like a lot of people in that when you do see a hot chick, you tend to check out their drama wikis, and go on a rampage of their works.

So currently having just watched Secret Garden I have Ha Ji-Won as my number one, and numbers after that are murky, as I think a lot of the chicks I see on my streams are HOTT ! Also I have been watching a lot of Korean ones lately as for a few years I watched a lot of J dramas, and films.

2. Kim Ha Neul, 2. Yoon Eun Hye, 2. Lee Na Young, 2. Gong Hyo Jin, AND what is cool is that in Gongs up coming drama her co-star is Ha Ji-Wons roommate in Secret Garden. That chick is a real cutie also.

Back to my number one pick, if you catch her in Secret ( with KIM HA NEUL ), along with two films in between, 100 days with Mr. Arrogant, and the Duelist you will see some fine acting.

Lee na Young I loved her in Who are You, and a lot of her other films. Gong, what can you say, Volcano High, Sang do, Hello Teacher, Pasta, and another two dramas between them all. Like Gong, I have seen most of Kim Ha Neuls works, and love them all, she’s a real fox.

Yoon Eun Hye I don’t know why she does not have confidence in her acting, or who has criticized her, BUT everything I have seen her in, which is all( save for Rainbow Romance ), I have loved to death.

Since I have been watching Asian Films, and Dramas for about 7 years now, one thing is for sure, there is a never ending supply of Hot Women to watch.

Hi there! And thank you for sharing your thoughts!

Re Ha Ji Won, I have seen all the movies you have mentioned and absolutely agree with you. She has this knack of just transforming into every character that she plays and is practically always brilliant- even in that horrid movie that was Phone (!!!) Have yet to see her (in her latest film?) Closer To Heaven though. I did read that she spent a good chunk of time prior to filming learning how to professionally dress a corpse, cut the hair and everything. Now that is dedication. And pure love. respect and professionalism for what she does.

Have heard v. mixed reviews on Secret Garden though so I still haven’t given it a go… but sounds like it may be worth it just for Ji Won??~~

From the four or five films that I’ve seen of hers, I like Kim Ha Neul alot too. But although I do think she is a good actress, I just don’t connect with her as much as some of the other actresses that I’ve named. I think Road Number One has scarred me forever for everyone involved in the series, lol. However, I am eager to see her in her latest flick with Jang Geun Suk taking on the lead female role in the Korean version of Kimi wa Petto.

Ditto on Gong Hyo Jin :)

Re Yoon Eun Hye, I think she is adorable too- don’t know how to say it but she just has this wholesome appeal about her and I think it is this charm that helps smother over any technical flaws she may have with her continually improving acting.

there is a never ending supply of Hot Women to watch.
^^ahahah, well, whatever gets the people into the cinemas hey!! lol ;)) But yes, glad to meet another Asian film/drama fan in you!

I guess when I said hott women it was more like comparing them to the mainline actresses in the U.S. The Asian women are so very easy on the eyes, even the ones that are removed from the lead parts, that you feel as though they are all very pretty. Their acting is so natural that you don’t really feel that they are acting, and the writing is about people, for people, and not overwhelmed with special effects.

That said, Having watched Secret Garden now 4 times all the way through it is without any doubt my all time favorite drama to watch. That the first viewing was only over a month ago. A lot of artists whether its music, or film have that one must see work that they create, or are in. Secret Garden is one such work for Ha Ji-Won. It all comes together, cast, and writing to form something special. The opening episode is so fantastic, you would not believe it could get any better, but IT DOES !

As a member of aznVtv now for almost 5 years I can say that is truly my must have thing on the Internet. Being a Premium Unlimited member helps those that cannot afford to pay view some content on a site that is truly the best. Where do you view yours ?

While Kim is getting older she is in great shape as you can see in her recent film MY GIRLFRIEND IS A SECRET AGENT. Her defining work is On Air, you see not the young next door girl, but a real woman. Her acting really shows a new side to her in that one. Watching Kim in Bye June, My Tutor Friend, and Too Beautiful to lie, along with the other two I mentioned is a real treat to see her progression in acting. I have not watched Road Number One yet, as a simple fact I cannot stand the thought of another war on the Peninsula. The people in the South are really just now recovering from that, and the thought of the global NWO starting another war there breaks my heart for those people.

I think if one were to watch Hello My Teacher, Hello Miss, and Sweet 18 they will see three fine dramas with Gong,Lee, and Han, and catch Gianna in Windstruck. Of course come to my blog, and hear some good music, and check out the films. Chat with you later, have a Great One.

Who are your other favourite actresses then?? xPPP

15 04 2011

I agree with all remarks re Kim Ha Neul. I think she is one fine actress. I have seen her play so many different roles and indeed she does inhabit the character completely ‘ON AIR’ was brilliant. and one of my favourite dramas. I would like to see her play a lighter and more romantic role with So Ji Sub. She could do it with ease and he needs a good actress like that to bring him back to romance in a more happy story. Too much heavy drama from him lately and he is so charming and goodlooking that I wish he would do a comedy.

I love Gong Hyo Jin in Pasta and I’m excited for Best Love! True that nothing happens in Pasta but that’s what I love about it. It still manage to engage without the “drama” and her with chef is too adorable not to watch.

Just got to know Kim Hyun Joo from Sparkling (or Twinkle or Glitter… how many names are there?!) and I love her in it. She makes me believe in her character and I might check her other works in future.

Lee Na Young is one of my favorite actress as well. First noticed her in Maundy Thursday and can’t help looking for other works of hers and realize she’s in Please Teach Me English, one of my favorite comedy. I then caught Laddy Daddy and Plan B, loved the former but can’t finish the later. No idea why, but she was so good in both.
Thanks for bringing my attention to Someone Special. Been in my to watch list for the longest time even with my love for Jung Jae Young. Will be sure to check it out very soon!

I saw Ueno Juri in Nodame and love her to bits. Who wouldn’t? After reading what you’ve written I’m going to stack Last Friends in my watch list as well. Been away from Jdrama for sometime now…

Also thanks for the recommendation of Mika Nakashima. Just what I needed. ballad. Am getting so sick of my playlist. Love her voice and the first vid that came out after I googled is Yuki no Hana which I’ve definitely heard it somewhere before and loved it…

I breezed through the comments (62!) and saw that some were listing theirs as well, I don’t particularly have any that comes to mind other than what’s mentioned above. But this lady I definitely have a girl crush on: http://www.pootsville.com/
She’s not an actress nor a singer, just a girl with her blog. It helps that she’s from my home country, Singapore. I love the few words she drop here and there, her photography and she has awesome fashion sense as well. Ohh she do appear in local magazines from time to time.

Glad to know we like alot of the same actresses! Lee Na Young is def awesome :))

Re Yuki no Hana, I’m thinking maybe if you’ve seen the Korean drama, I’m Sorry I Love You (with the gorgeous So Ji Sub^^) then that’s probably why it sounds familiar. The theme for misa, Snowflower by Park Hyo Shin is the Korean version of Mika’s Yuki no Hana. There are a million (well, not quite…) different covers of the song. I think I even did a post on it a while back *shameless self promotion* ^^;;;;; https://candyme.wordpress.com/2010/06/11/do-they-make-snowflower%C2%A0trees/

Re, pootsville <<— the title is too cute! lol Thankyou for the rec, I love the photographs on this blog :)) I'm thinking I will be checking it out from now on. That's so cool you are from Singapore, too! Have visited the country many years ago.. it's such hip but beautiful place! And very clean, too :D :D

P.S. *whispers to Belva: Watch Last Friends now, watch Last Friends now, watch Last Friends now…"* lol. To be honest, the plot does have a few issues towards the end but worth it for Juri, Eita & Asami. Hope you enjoy it :)

I love XX's style of writing and sense of humor but I've been kept busy by many other stuff so her site kinda slip off my mind. Gonna check it out again.

Cool, found you’re blog through a jdorama post and loved your HYD/MG/BOF breakdown. Not watching the other versions after I read that. Haha!
Anyway, Nodame Cantabile was the 2nd jdorama I watched after Hana Kimi and was totally crushing on Mizukawa Asami in that. I found Last Friends in mysoju.com (through Asami’s filmography) and watched it because it had most of the Nodame cast in it, and that’s where I finally noticed Ueno Juri. Yes, I loved her as a Nodame, but Ruka??? Daymn! As she was leaning in to kiss Michiru I had to press pause and scream “Noooooooooo Nodameeeeeeeeee NOOOOOOOO!!!” I then had to double take and check because really… this can’t be Nodame??? Haha! She totally rocks!

And Mika Nakashima? She was the face of Lisbeth Sander as I was reading the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Lurv lurv.

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to comment! Thank you also for the kind words, it means alot (especially knowing that there are people in the big wide world who agree with some of my crazy thoughts, lol.)

Nodame was one of my earlier jdoramas, too (I’ma late J-bloomer)! To date it is still the one dorama I had the biggest blast watching. And LOL, at your reaction to the scene where Ruka sneaks a smooch on Michiru- for some reason, I wasn’t expecting it so early on in the series so I was in a lil shock… but not as much as the moment when Nishikido Ryo’s character starts beating the crap out of… well, everyone -_-;;;

Yay! A fellow Mika Nakashima fan! What was your first exposure to her? Are you a fan of her music or her acting work (or both xPP)?? Girl With The Dragon Tattoo- someone told me that is a good book! Alas, I need to find time to get onto it. Do you recommend it?

Thanks again for stopping by, toots. Hope to see more of you around :)

If anyone here has a subscription to Amazon Prime, then you can watch the Girl with the dragon tattoo trillogy for free as part of your membership. A few of the reviewers there said that the book was better for them than the films, but the films were quite easy to watch for me, and there was no slow parts to it.

For Nodame fans check out some of Ayase Haruka’s works, as she is not only a stunner, but her acting, and the films, and dramas she has been in are first rate. Some fav’s, Cyborg Girl, Ichi, Hotaru no Hikari, and Byakuyako

Have become a recent fan of Ayase Haruka actually, after watching Byakuyako. I was apprehensive in the beginning that she may be “too pretty” and “too girly” to play the role but mah, was I impressed. The girl definitely has some acting chops, and also this unexplainable likeable charm that grows more and more on you the more you see her. Classic beauty. I do agree with you about Haruka being in first-rate films, that is with the exception of The Crazy-Chuckling-Banana-Munching-Plaid-Suit-Wearing-Neuroscientist Show aka Mr Brain of course, lol^^;

Really looking forward to Jin II :)))))

I checked the email too late today to respond now, as I work midnights, and have to get ready to go. I love that site, it has no ads, and never will, its for people who love asian programming, and watch a lot of it. It uses Paypal, or Credit Cards, and its secure, and I have never had a problem in all the years I have been on the site. The last drama I see of Ayase’s was the first Hotaru, then I watched a lot of her films, so I have yet to see Mr.Brain, or the JIN’s. Lately just been watching some of the media the stars of Secret Garden have been in, and then of course some side tracks of people I have seen in those films, or dramas.

Watching Hyun Bin’s Snow Queen led me to the Wedding dress to see how Go Ju Yun had aged from Fox Family, and Snow Queen, but I think it was edited out as it seemed to end without showing Sora aging to wear the dress. And I am going to watch some dramas with Sung Yu Ri his other co-star in Snow Queen. Then a couple of dramas of Ha Ji Won that I have not watched yet, Damo, Bali, and Hwang Jin Yi, both the Drama, and the movie of it as that lead actress caught my eye also.

Thats a rough plan, but knowing me I will get sidetracked from that.

Being in the States aznVtv works well as most connections here since cable are hi speed. It streams on the Winamp, or VLC player. On Winamp its speed for Premium is at 497 kbs. I just don’t know how it plays overseas though, it would be how good ones connection is.

I don’t do hardly any downloading here in the States, as the ISPs are really watching it, and of course the copyright issues. So the streaming works great for me in that regards. Content for Premium members now is 1674 anime, 2891 films, and Drama is free for all at 1217. So lots of content, and its set up is easy to find titles, origin, year ect.

Let me know.

Haruka back in JIN2 with Osawa Takao. (have him on a shelf by himself. Like him…really LIKE.) I am almost hesitating to begin to watch the second JIN. What can they do to carry on this strange story. Will Jin stay in Edo or will he ever come back to his modern life. Surely he can’t leave Saki after all they have gone through.
Almost at the point of giving up on GOU. It has become so far away from the real history and for me a taiga should stay close to the real actions of that time. However, it definitely is a star turn for Ueno and maybe that is what they were going for in the first place. She is playing the role in a splendid way and the rest of the cast are perfection. However, I cannot give this drama a ten and I don’t think it truly can be called a taiga. It is a fictional story set in the Warring Period and that is a different thing altogether.
Yes..I am being picky.

I know you comment a lot peggy, also if you would be interested in becomming a Premium Unlimited Member at aznVtv let me know. Peggy dear, yo have no idea how relieved/happy you have made me! I remember a short while ago you pointed out that Ueno Juri was becoming a little predictable and a teeny bit annoying with her portrayal of the title character in GOU but now hearing your “star turn” remark… *nods head*… yepyep, grinners all around xDD

Re your frustrations of GOU’s historical accuracy VS the fictional elements, I don’t think it’s being picky. This is something I always find very touchy, and I guess it just depends on what the viewer is looking for. For me, if the story itself is entertaining and done in a way where they don’t take away the essence of the historical figures, then whether or not they play out events true to historic representation doesn’t phase me so much… how much of this is happening in GOU? But I agree, it is hard to swallow the way they sometimes market certain series as a historical drama when, just as you described, it’s clearly just a fictional story set in a historical era. They really shouldn’t even bother to use the real names of any historical figures and make up their own. That would bode better with me.

My 3 that’s also in your 10: Gong Hyo Jin, Ueno Juri, and Mika Nakashima. I’ve always loved Gong Hyo Jin’s acting, and she actually left the strongest impression on me in Ruler of Your Own World (not that the rest of the cast wasn’t impressive); Also having watched her in Crush and Blush, she was amazingly awkward and odd. I’ve seen a lot of Ueno Juri’s work as well, and if you haven’t already, you should watch Niji/Rainbow (it starts off slow, but get past the first 10 or 20 minutes and it’s totally worth it). Her role’s both different from Nodame and Last Friends, though a bit of a tomboy. I first knew about Mika due to her acting in the Nana movies and I thought she did pretty well (also thought the same of her later strand of supporting drama roles). I also ended up liking most of her songs and found out that she sang the original Yuki no Hana (which I’d actually heard the Kversion of in I’m Sorry I Love You).
Other girl crushes: Miyazaki Aoi, she’s cute and talented – even though she didn’t look like Hachi, I think she had her down to a tee. She was able to play such mature roles at an amazingly young age. Moon Geun Young was amazing in Painter of the Wind. Unfortunately, the writing in Marry Me, Mary went downhill about 2/3 through . . . :(

jicks

Heya! Sorry for delayed reply (been on hiatus).

Re Ruler Of Your Own World, agreed with your thoughts on Gong Hyo Jin and the rest of the cast. Everytime the series is brought up, it makes me happy that it does have a pretty strong following in the cyberworld despite it never really achieving huge television ratings.

I like Juri the best when she isn’t playing classically “girly” roles, so your description of her as a tomboy in Rainbow does pique my interest (& I’ve also acquired a liking for Ichihara Hayato after his stint as Aniya-baka in Rookies xD) I actually have a copy of Rainbow somewhere but I can’t find it, lol. With your rec though, I will def make an effort to dig it out ;)

Ooooooh… are you a misa fan as well? ^^

Re Miyazaki Aoi, I rate her quite highly as well. I’ve only seen her in 3 different movies but each time she has impressed me with her ease at capturing the audience’s attention. And effortless star with seemingly eternal youthful looks.

I want to watch Mary Stayed Out All night / Marry Me, Mary for Kim Jae Wook and Jang Geun Suk but I’m too scared… you’re not the first to say that it sucked, lol.

Yes, I’m a misa fan as well. :) Im Soo Jung and So Ji Sub had such awesomely, cute chemistry in the series . . . <3 Another couple that I'd recently watched were in 49 Days (though unfortunately they were short scenes).

What were the movies that you'd watched that Miyazaki Aoi was in?

There's so much eye candy of those two hot guys in Mary Stayed Out All Night . . . ;) The first few episodes were so cute, but the corniness later on . . . :\

I know what you mean. So Ji Sub and Im Soo Jung in misa will forever hold a special place in my heart, and the soundtrack just the same.

So you would recommend 49 Days as well? One of my cousins has said it’s good also but I just can’t find time for it^^;;;

Let’s see… I’ve seen Miyazaki Aoi in Nana, Heavenly Forest and Virgin Snow. Anything else of hers you’d recommend? Have been dying to find a subbed copy of Sukida, more for Eita than anyone but of course Miyazaki Aoi is in that as well.

haha, I think I will probably end up watching Mary Stayed Out All Night, purely for the eye candy you mentioned. Jang Geun Suk and Kim Jae Wook in guyliner is more than enough for me, lol.

4 07 2011
misao

Yeah, I’d recommend 49 Days. It was a good series overall, with an interesting concept. Majority of the actors are good/well-known too.

I’d recommend Gaichu/Harmful Insect. Miyazaki Aoi was very different in it, she had a very mature role (Yu Aoi’s in it as well). It’s sort of a depressing and slow but rather poignant movie, and she was amazing in it. Shonen Merikensack was a fun, sort of crazy movie. I watched some of Gimme Heaven (but it wasn’t really that good . . . I wanted to like it, I generally liked the cast :( ). I haven’t really seen much else of her stuff (and I watched all of the ones that you’d watched), though I think I have more on discs . . . I didn’t see much of Atsuhime, but she won quite a few awards for it.

I actually hear that there’s some bad rumors about Jang Geun Suk, unfortunately (if they are true) . . . If anything, just watch like the first 10 episodes (I think I stopped at episode 12 . . . ?).

What dramas are you presently watching? I’ve been watching City Hunter lately, and I still have yet to watch the few final episodes of The Greatest Love.

18 07 2011

I’ve heard City Hunter is good! Especially over at doozy’s blog, what do you think of it? I’m not Lee Min Ho’s biggest fan (to put things nicely) so anything he’s in I generally steer clear of… that is unless of course, there are enough people pushing me ;)

I’ve just finished Coffee Prince, which I know, I am a million years behind the rest of the world but for some reason I could never get around to it (& finding a copy with decent English subs was a hassle.) But finally, I’ve seen it and I TOTALLY GET THE HYPE. Was never a huge Gong Yoo fan prior, but now I’m converted. And Yoon Eun Hye… that girls just oozes personality & charm- a natural born superstar. Am I right to say that you seem to be more of a K-drama fan? ^^

The next series I plan on watching are, J-dramas Natsu no Koi wa Nijiiro ni Kagayaku, Taisetsu na Koto and also Taiwanese drama Love Buffet. Not really in for much substance clearly but I’m in the mood to watch alot of prettiness xP

Thanks for the Miyazkai Aoi recs! Have heard good things about her in Gaichu and now with your praise, I’m thinking I definitely need to suss it out ASAP! I have a copy of Shonen Merikensack lying around actually… I think she looks awesomely cool on the cover/poster ;)

City Hunter is good (although, I don’t really get it as an adaption of the manga series as do others . . . :\ They could have totally just titled it something else, considering how it’s pretty much nothing like the manga). I liked Lee Min Ho in BoF (more than MatsuJun in the Jdrama), but he really is great in City Hunter (really can carry the show) and practically oozes charm (and being a jerk too, though it’s required). And those martial art lessons were totally worth it. :) One thing that sort of bothers me though is the way he sits, with one leg crossed over the other . . . he always sits the same in every role, or is it just me?

Ah . . . Coffee Prince. :D Gender bender goodness! Yoon Eun Hye was really good in it, though unfortunately she hasn’t done any other shows with as much success. The last couple of episodes in it weren’t so great though . . . :\ Unfortunately, Yoon Eun Hye’s health wasn’t doing so good then. Yeah, she is charismatic. :)

Yeah, I tend to watch more Kdramas (the Jdramas produced lately don’t seem that good to begin with either . . .). I feel like Jdramas tend to be too short with only about 10 ep. per season, and that can cause the writing, etc. to be lacking (or else they just generally need better writers/directors). About 16 ep. tends to feel just right for me . . . Though the way everything tends to be recycled (themes, typical characters/illnesses – i.e. cancer, actors) can get tiring in Kdramas. I’m originally an anime/manga fan though (so I can get rather critical of live-actions if I’m a fan of the original).

I watched a few episodes of Natsu no Koi wa Nijiiro ni Kagayaku, but didn’t really get into it . . . How’s Taisetsu na Koto and Love Buffet? I like Miura Haruma . . . Most comedic Tdramas don’t make for much substance, but do make for awesome crack! I watched all of Down With Love – not the best acting, and Ella overacts but I think she’s really charismatic (like in an Amanda Bynes sort of way). Corner With Love is really adorable; I really like Barbie Hsu (she was great in MARS!) and Show Luo was good in it too.

If you’re ever in the mood for an old Jdrama, I’d recommend Koi no Shitex3. It’s on the slow side, but it has a theme on different sorts of relationships, with good writing, and good actors (Yamada Takayuki <3 & Kanno Miho). One relationship seemed to ick people out, but the vibe I had of it totally wasn't like that.

Have fun watching! :)

I think my Mum watched Down To Love (for Jerry Yan xPP) but I couldn’t stomach the acting^^; I do like Ella though, I enjoyed The Rose (don’t know why, lol) and also Hana Kimi. Just as you say, she has this unbuyable charm ^_^ Corner With Love so pretty fun to watch, too! Got a little draggy towards the end though overall, I still liked it alot.

But MARS, I LOVE sincerely. I’ve always wished the series would get more mention when it comes to discussing the best Tw-dramas, or perhaps even best Asian dramas. It’s definitely one of my favourite of all-time (Vic was absolutely perfect.)

Oh I went to put my copy of Love Buffet in and it didn’t have English subs!!!!!! Boo!!!!!! I was so in the mood for some brainless Fahrenheit eye-candy fun T_T Oh well. So I went to watch NatsuNiji instead, hadn’t had a JE kick in a while… halfway through it, it’s nowhere near as bad as I imagined it to be (based on feedback around the cyberworld.) I don’t love it but I am enjoying it and do like Jun’s character Taiga. So far it’s much better than his last full-length series Smile *shudders at cringe-worthy sobby memories*

lol @ your observation of Lee Min Ho’s leg crossing action- perhaps that is just the way HE sits. I dunno, I haven’t paid enough attention to him to judge, haha.

Oh did I hear someone say Yamada Takayuki??? I’m SOLD, right there baby! That guy is one, if not the best actor of his generation. Will investigate Koi ga Shite x3 for sure. I love watching older stuff but often never know what ones to touch unless someone suggests it. Thankyou muchly for the rec :)

Not sure if I commented on MMM but I only continued to watch this drama for Kim Jae Wook. I think he is delicious. He seems so calm and moves so nicely. Great appearance and lovely feet…..Ahh you didn’t notice his feet???

There are two actors who move me in a special way. One is Jae Wook and the other is Seti Koji. Seti actually almost changes my gender he is so beautiful. But I will be admiring Jae Wook in an entirely different way. He was pretty good in Bad Guy with Nam Gil and backstage they were hilarious together.

GOU remains a total irritant. the acting is fine and the settings are beautiful but the way they have directed the Hideyoshi character is plain stupid. He was a fine general, totally loyal to Nobunaga, and achieved so much that he could never have been the idiot they show in this drama.

ahahahaha Peggy! Can’t say I’ve ever looked at his feet, but KJW certainly has nice ankles :D :D Noticed them in Bad Guy with his whole sockless situation ;) I find that he is the kinda actor who always plays his roles just as the series needs, i.e. not the type to greedily steal attention away from the main character/s but still finds his way to shine^^

Oh Seto Koji. The more and more I look into that boy’s eyes the more I’m thinking the same thing as you, Peggy, tehe. It must hurt to be that pretty xD Re Gou, I am still yet to find time to touch it but I think it’s a good thing you are continuing on with it… because then you can share with me all the good and the to expect ;))

Just a quick word re GOU DON’T READ IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED THIS DRAMA AND INTEND TO LATER…..

I have stoppped D/l but I watch on TV with Eng. subs. It is still entertaining but it does become irritating when they go overboard with Hideyoshi. He was indeed a man with a great deal going on in his life. Since this story is about the woman during the warring period we don’t see too much of the actual battles of course. He has a way with dealing with people and situations so that in the end he gets just what he wants. He is no fool. Eventually he will get Chacha for his concubine and he won’t have to force her. She will find him more and more interesting. Poor Gou will be horrified and do her best to stop it all but she won’t succeed. She will however give him a push to send him off to become Regent. He then will have so much power over the Emperor and court. What an amazing man to come from digging in the fields to becoming a sandal bearer for Nobunaga and thence to being a top general with great merit. amazing man.
Trying to watch City Hunter but hard to find on TV here.
I am enjoying Romance Town ?think that is name Like the male lead. Seen him a lot. I will find his name next time.
Fading here so must stop. Peg

Okay, so I read the first line of your comment Peggy and then had to skip the next paragraph, yikes! Will have to come back to read the whole thing when I get around to watching Gou :D :D

Read the last couple of sentences though… re Romance Town, I just dramawikied the actors,- do you mean Jung Gyu Woon or Kim Min Joon? I think the only current K-drama I’m interested in watching would be Heartstrings. Thinking it’s a bit of a You’re Beautiful aftertaste thing ;)

I rate this scene: Coffee Prince [episode 17] « [Candy.Me]

[…] natural spunk and charisma of yours. Yoon Eun Hye shi, you may not have made the top 10 list of my girl crushes, but you ain’t too far off. And there’s no denying you are one in a freaking […]

Oh they are both charming but I was really taken with Jung Gyu Woon. He is such an interesting actor. Looks very different in facial features. You would never mistake his eyes and smile. He has done many different roles and every time I am impressed. Besides he is somewhat a good male type without being pushy..if you know what I mean. I think he must like being an actor because I don’t think he ever went for the ‘idol’ thing.

Hi Jicks, WARNING! This gives details re GOU if you have not yet watched.

I have just been re-reading some of the above posts. Have been absent but still hover now and then. I want to tell you that GOU is still on my watch every weekend. It has picked up a lot since Gou made her final marriage to Hidetada Sorry right now can’t remember the actor’s name but he is charming. I would never treat him coldly as Gou has done. He is not a simple man but a very attractive deep thinking noble. Hideyoshi has died after giving lots of orders to various people especially Mitsunari who was always his chief assistant. Troubles will now start to rise up between the Toyatomi and the Tokugawa. It actually has picked up in interest now that the men have come back into the action more, and it is quite hard to realise how the time has gone by because no-one seems to look any older except Hideyoshi.
I was fascinated that Ieyasu was deprived of his lands and he went to Edo which was a very small insignificant little place. However, he was far enough away so that he could build Edo into a very important city eventually. It became Tokyo much later.

The latest drama I am trying to watch is ‘The Princess’ Man.’ Very difficult story and so harsh and sad that I can’t watch through a complete episode most of the time. Have you seen this yet. Park Shi Hu is doing such a good job with this role. I won’t say any more in case you have not watched yet.

hehehe Peggy, it seems like to me you’re a bit of a GOU fanatic ;) Thank you for the heads up on the storyline! I STILL haven’t touched the series :( …bother, now that I am looking at my situation properly, I think I am losing my credibility as a dorama-lover ARRRGGGHHH!!!!!! *note to self: MUST return to former crazed-dorama-watching self IMMEDIATELY*

Had no idea what The Princess’ Man was until you mentioned it… and now reading its synopsis on dramawiki, it’s being described as a Chosun dynasty version of Romeo and Juliet— which has me sold 100%. The ratings look like they were pretty good, too. Have you finished the series yet, Peggy? Is it very heavy or are there light-hearted moments in it?

Oh Jicks you must start this drama. It is really one of those dramas that will stay in your mind. I think it will become a classic. I really do not exaggerate when I say that I cannot go all the way through some of the episodes. I have to watch in segments and still it amazes me. At the moment I still have a few episodes left and here in California we are having a messed up delivery from the transmitter. Some of the dramas have vanished but they will come back in a week or two. I can’t find TPM right now. Of course it is online but I prefer to see it on large screen TV. It is based almost entirely on real history. Just one of two in the cast are an amalgam of more than one or two people. It still rings true and these incidents really happened. There are lovely romantic moments and happiness is in the air. Then, due to misunderstandings, the tragedy creeps in. It will hold your attention for sure. Park Shi Hu is adorable and goes up a notch in his acting level. I think he will be a changed person after this drama. The girl he loves in the drama is so good also. In fact the whole cast is one to make you feel so satisfied when you watch. Personally I would have liked this to be made as a much longer film.
I am still catching up with GOU I think they have uploaded Ep40 (?) but with the TV I am still watching Ep.33 and waiting for 34. We can see it with English subs over the weekend. Juri is now (at last) being allowed to present an older more mature role. She is now living in Edo with her third husband. He is very attractive I must say. I think there may be 46 Episodes altogether.
Watch The Princess’ Man first!

Quite honestly the dorama world for me has been lacking in classics lately— the special ones that stick in your heart seem fewer and farther between. Don’t know if it’s a case of “seeing it all before” but sometimes I really do reminisce the good old times where every single series you watched was one for the ages.

But The Princess’ Man does hold much promise, so I will try to get onto it asap! (What would I do without your recommendations, Peggy? ;P)

I was quite happy making a few additions to some posts and then deciding to add another actress named Shinohara Ryolko who acts with Kimura quite often. She is about mid thirties i think and married and has child. this has stopped her doing the extremely romantic scenes just the way Kimura tones down his sexy scenes. However together they can melt the film now and then. she is a fine actress. All of a sudden my posting vanished and my computer went AWOL. Sorry. Trying to repeat and I hope this will stay put. Ryoko is just now doing ‘Last Cinderella’ and there is a wonderful young Jaanese actor whom I have not seen before and I think he is gorgeousl His name is Haruma Miuri. He will be fit to fill shoes like Kimura if he goes on with his good acting for the future. Really I have not seen anyone like him for ages. Fujiki is also in this and more of the age for Ryoko. I just saw episode 1 and will continue once they put it up on d-addicts for d/l. Ryoko is playing this without any makeup to make her look younger or glamorous. Very brave and she looks good. It is a story about younger man and older woman. Plus older man getting in the way being annoying I think. Funny maybe. Set in Beauty salon.
